The balsam also known in Latin as Hypericum Perforatum (St.Johns Wort) is one of the most powerful and effective plants used in skin diseases, especially through its regenerative and healing action. It is placed on open or old wounds, skin diseases and inflammations. It can also be swallowed as a treatment for stomach ulcers. This particular herb is a treasure of Greek nature but needs special treatment because it is quite sensitive. We extract it by cold pressing in a special mixture of olive oil, which gives it its light reddish color.
Herb characteristics
St. John's wort is known to all of us as Hypericum perforatum, sword grass, Prodromou herb or turtle grass.
It is an evergreen plant with a height that reaches 80 points - 1 meter and belongs to the Hypericidae family. It is native and we will meet it in the Mediterranean countries, in the rest of Europe, Africa, the Asian continent and in many places along the planet, In our country there are several different species of hypericum and most of them are endemic.
The plant can grow even in the poorest, dry and stony soils, it is recognized by its yellow flowers, which consist of 5 petals, while the central part of the flower includes the spots that give the characteristic red color to the balsam oil or effusion.
The useful parts of the plant used are the flowers, which should be collected with the first cool drops of dawn, when their oils are at their highest concentration.
History of Balsamohortos
It is said that the herb got its name, Hypericus, because in the past it was used to decorate temples and during religious ceremonies it was placed on the icons (hyper – eikon = on the image).
Balsamwort has been valued by the famous herbalists of ancient Greece, Hippocrates, Dioscorides, Pliny and Galen, with which they treated burns, joint pains, improved blood flow and used it as a tonic in the recovery process.
It has been used for embalming and this is one of the reasons why it is also called balsam.
