OR Ipecacuanha (ipecaquana) is a plant belonging to the family Rhizophoraceae. This plant is endemic to South America and specifically to Brazil, where it thrives in tropical and humid forests. The root of the plant is the one mainly used for medicinal purposes and has a characteristic light brown color.
Chemical Composition
The root of Ipecacuanha contains:
- Alkaloids such as ipecacuanhin and emeticine, which are responsible for its emetic and laxative properties. - Saponins, flavonoids and glycosides that contribute to enhancing its actions and developing its antiseptic effect.
