Characteristics of the Bitter Almond Tree
The bitter almond tree is a different variety of almond tree and its scientific name is Prunus amygdalus amara or Amygdalus communis amaris. The bitter almond tree belongs to the same Rosaceae family as the common almond tree that produces sweet almonds. It is a wild tree that grows in many different parts of the world, even in the most barren areas with abundant sunlight. The height of the tree can reach 10 meters.
In autumn it sheds its leaves and its flowering period is long,
from late January until March. Its flowers give off a wonderful
fragrance and eventually turn into fruit with a distinctly bitter taste and toxic
properties. The bitter almond tree produces green fruits that contain
cyanogenic oil and the toxic substance benzaldehyde. It is important to mention
that the consumption of bitter almonds can lead to extremely dangerous
health conditions, especially in young children.
There are cases reporting the presence of bitter almonds on sweet almond trees. This can occur when edible almond crops coexist in areas where bitter almond trees grow, due to self‑fertilization of the trees by pollen carried by the wind or insects.
History of Bitter Almond
Some historical data indicate that the origin of the bitter almond tree has its roots in North Africa; at the same time, however, its presence is also reported in Western Asia, while the wild type of almond tree (including the bitter variety) appears in the ancient Greek ecosystem from 8,000 BC. Today, although its fruits are unsuitable for consumption, the tree is cultivated in Spain, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia. Almond kernels have been found in the tombs of Egyptian kings dating back to 1325 BC.
Some other historical data indicate the spread of the tree in Italy,
starting from Greece in the 2nd century BC and then the fruit travelled
to Spain, Portugal, France and America, where its cultivation
also began.
Today bitter almonds are valued for their medicinal properties.
They contain vitamin B17, considered one of the most powerful
anticancer substances in nature. Their consumption should be recommended and
monitored by health professionals, as due to their toxicity it is
limited to a very small number of nuts.
Other fruit kernels such as apricot, plum and peach
develop the same volatile oils as bitter almonds, which are also
considered poisonous.
