Characteristics of Geranium
Geranium is a very hardy plant that can grow even in the toughest soil! Its scientific name is Pelargonium and it belongs to the Geraniaceae family, like mastic geranium and rose geranium.
Geranium is a low, perennial shrub with rapid growth and slender branches with lush green foliage. It loves sunny spots, facing south, which help it to have a long flowering period, from early spring until autumn. The flowers of the plant are not fragrant, but if we gently rub the leaves, they release the unique characteristic aroma that is often used in perfumes and cosmetic creams.
Geranium is sensitive to cold, yet it is a hardy plant and is rarely affected by diseases. It propagates easily in spring by cutting small twigs from the top growth, which we plant in a pot or directly in the ground.
Geranium essential oil is obtained from the flowering tops of the plant by steam distillation.
History of Geranium
Geranium got the name Pelargonium from the Greek word pelargos (stork), because of the similarity of its flowers to the stork’s beak. It is a plant dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite. It originates from Africa and is cultivated today in Egypt, Kenya and Algeria. It is said to have been introduced into Europe at the end of the 17th century, in regions where the climate favored its growth.
One of the first to work on the distillation of geranium essential oil was the French chemist Recluz, who began using it in perfumery. Later, the Italian doctor Rovesti recommended it for dealing with tension and anxiety.
In Greece, geranium is a very popular plant. It is considered one of the effective insect-repellent plants and is often planted for this reason next to basil, lavender and sage.
