Characteristics of Lemon
The lemon tree is one of the trees we easily encounter in our country, in every yard or garden. It belongs to the large citrus family, like the orange tree, the mandarin tree, the grapefruit, and the kumquat. It is a tree native to tropical Asia, where it has been cultivated for at least 2,500 years.
The lemon tree, with the scientific name Citrus limon, is a fruit tree whose productivity is favoured when it is in sunny locations and at temperatures from 15–30°C. If not pruned, its height can reach 6 metres. It needs fertile soil and plenty of water. It keeps its leaves and produces fruit throughout the year. It is often planted in a pot in the garden or on the balcony.
It is cultivated all over the world and its fruits are among the most important sources of dietary fiber and vitamin C, and act synergistically with other flavonoids and carotenes,
Lemon essential oil is produced from the outer peel of the lemon by the method of cold pressing.
History of the Lemon Tree
The lemon tree appeared in Greece in the 2nd century AD. The value of its fruits began to be recognized after the Middle Ages. At that time it started being cultivated in Sicily and Spain.
Since ancient times, lemon peel has been valued for its antiparasitic and insect-repellent properties. In 1698, the pharmacist Nicolas Lemery recognized the value of lemon, mentioning in his book its ability as a blood purifier and a reliever of intestinal bloating. A little later, the British Navy used lemon to treat scurvy, transporting large quantities of the fruit on board.
Today, lemon essential oil is used in pastry recipes, in massage oils for the treatment of cellulite, and in shampoos for oily hair.
