The Arctostaphylos uva-ursi tincture, also known as bearberry, is prepared from the leaves of the plant Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, which belongs to the Ericaceae family. This tincture is used in phytotherapy for its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.

Composition of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi Tincture

Contains:

  • Alkaloids (e.g. arbutin)
  • Glycosides
  • Essential oils
  • Phenolic acids
  • Tannins
  • Vitamins (mainly B-complex vitamins)

Pharmacological Actions and Properties

1. Antiseptic action on the urinary tract

  • Contains arbutin, which is converted into hydroquinone in the urinary tract, exerting strong antibacterial action. It is often used in cases of urinary tract infection.

2. Diuretic action

  • Increases the production and excretion of urine.

3. Astringent action

  • Due to its tannins (gallotannins), it exerts an astringent effect on the mucous membranes of the urinary tract, reducing inflammation and secretions.

4. Anti-inflammatory action

  • Reduces irritation, burning sensation and inflammation in the urinary bladder.

Indications for Use

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) – Cystitis

  • Urethritis, pyelocystitis (mild to moderate, as adjunctive therapy)

  • Disinfection of the urinary tract in recurrent infections

    Dosage

    15–20 drops in a little water or herbal tea, 2–3 times a day.

    Precautions and Side Effects

    • Contraindicated in individuals with known allergies to bearberry or other members of the Ericaceae family.
    • Possible side effects: Mild gastrointestinal discomfort or allergic reactions.
    • Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, unless otherwise directed by a physician.

    The Arctostaphylos uva-ursi tincture is a natural preparation with many beneficial properties, mainly for supporting urinary tract health and relieving inflammation and infections. Its use should be carried out with care and appropriate guidance, especially in individuals with sensitivities or underlying conditions.
