Characteristics of the Vine
The grapevine (vitis vinifera) is a woody and perennial shrub that grows in many parts of the world. It is a vascular plant and belongs to the Vitiaceae family. Its fruits are grapes, one of the favorite fruits of summer. It prefers the Mediterranean climate, sunny spots and fertile soil. Depending on the variety, the vine can grow climbing or spread its thin wooden fruits, several meters away from the original trunk.
The vine begins to form its fruits in May, which grow in bunches. After three months, in August, the grapes are ready to eat and there are many varieties available, including the Greek Savvatiano, Moschato, Samou, Roditis, Kotsifali, etc.
The vine is cultivated mainly for the consumption of its fruits, for the production of wine and grape marc. The valuable grape oil is produced from its seeds.
History of the Vine
The history of the vine, we could say, begins with the history of man! There are references to the ancestral seeds of the vine from the Neolithic era in different parts of the world, from the fertile valleys of the Mediterranean to the foothills of the Himalayas.
It is known to be closely associated with the culture and myths of Ancient Greece, such as in the Homeric epic Odyssey, which mentions that Odysseus defeated the Cyclops after first managing to get him drunk with wine.
The ancient Greeks dedicated the vine to the god Dionysus and wine always accompanied the celebrations of success and victory.
The vine and wine are also mentioned in many places in the New Testament and are considered a sacred symbol and ingredient in the church's sacraments.
