CALENDULA CHARACTERISTICS
Calendula, Calendula officinalis, is a wildflower belonging to the same genus as arnica. About 15 species of the genus Calendula have been reported in various floras of the planet. Among them, most of the pharmacological research is available for C. Officinalis, which is the most widely cultivated species.
Farmers plant calendula among summer vegetables to attract insects that enhance pollination and fruiting. At the same time, the plant's flowers deter harmful pests, thus maintaining balance in the ecosystem.
HISTORY
Calendula was first discovered in the Mediterranean and its flowers have been used in cooking since at least the 12th century, as they were consumed raw or cooked for their special flavor, aroma and color. In ancient times, both the Romans and Greeks included the flower in religious ceremonies.
In the Middle Ages, Calendula flowers were used for liver ailments and to strengthen the heart. In the 18th century, it was also mentioned as a remedy for headaches, jaundice, and red eyes. The plant was used in the Civil War as an aid to the treatment of wounds and jaundice.
The ancient Romans are believed to have been the original users of calendula. It is often reported that they had observed the plant's flowering to coincide with the first day of the month and therefore called it "little calendar" (calendae). In astrology, calendula is considered a masculine plant and is ruled by the sun and the element of fire.
