Characteristics of Chamomile

Chamomile is a widely known medicinal plant of the Asteraceae family. Two main species are used for their therapeutic properties: German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) and Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile). It is a low-growing plant with small, white, daisy-like flowers and aromatic leaves. It is cultivated in temperate climates and blooms mainly in spring and summer. The essential oil is extracted from the flowers, mainly by steam distillation.

Historical Facts

The use of chamomile dates back to ancient Egypt, where the plant was considered sacred and dedicated to the god Ra, and was used in ointments and oils for skin healing. The Greeks and Romans regarded it as a panacea for headaches, inflammations and gastrointestinal disorders. During the Middle Ages, chamomile was widely used in the form of tea or compresses for relaxation and relief from anxiety.

Ingredients

Chamomile essential oil from freshly cut flowers of the plant, distilled by the method of hydrodistillation.

Chemical Composition

Chamomile essential oil contains powerful active substances such as azulene (especially in German chamomile, which gives it its blue color), bisabolol, farnesene, and matricin. These compounds give the oil excellent anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic and sedative properties. Roman chamomile has a milder, fruity scent and is often used for relaxation and skin care.

Instructions for Use

Skin: 1–2 drops in 10 ml vegetable oil for sensitive or irritated skin.

Aromatherapy: 3–5 drops in a diffuser for stress, insomnia, irritability.

Bath: 5 drops in a full bathtub for a soothing effect and good sleep.

Massage: 5–8 drops in 30 ml carrier oil for muscle pain, colic, or relaxation before sleep.

Chinese Medicine - Ayurveda

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), chamomile is considered a herb that clears heat, calms the Shen (spirit) and promotes the circulation of Qi, ideal for cases of anxiety, nervous tension, insomnia and digestive disorders.
In Ayurveda, chamomile is tridoshic – suitable for balancing all three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), with a particular effect on soothing Pitta. It is used in infusions, rubs and oils for internal and external calm and balance.

Useful tips

- The use of chamomile essential oil should be avoided during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in children.
- Essential oils are intended for external use and should always be diluted in a carrier oil or other medium.
- Avoid direct contact with skin, eyes, and mouth.
