Characteristics of Citronella

Citronella is an aromatic, perennial tropical grass belonging to the genus Cymbopogon, related to lemongrass. The two most common species used for essential oil production are Cymbopogon nardus and Cymbopogon winterianus. The plant reaches up to 1.5 meters in height and has thin, green leaves with a characteristic fresh, lemony scent. It thrives in warm climates and is harvested mainly for the extraction of its aromatic oil.

Historical Background

The use of citronella has been known for centuries in India, Sri Lanka and other regions of Southeast Asia. Traditionally, its leaves were used to perfume spaces, repel insects and as an ingredient in natural remedies. Citronella essential oil became widely known in the West in the 20th century, mainly for its use as a natural insect repellent, especially against mosquitoes, but also for its disinfectant and deodorizing properties.

Ingredients

Citronella essential oil from the flowers and stems of the plant, obtained by steam distillation.

Chemical Composition

Citronella essential oil is rich in citronellal, geraniol, citronellol and limonene. These compounds give it antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal and deodorant properties, and are also responsible for the characteristic lemony scent of the oil.

Instructions for Use

The citronella essential oil is mainly used:

For insect repellent use: In a diffuser, room spray or 1–2 drops on clothes/skin (always diluted in a carrier oil).

In aromatherapy: For air purification and neutralization of unpleasant odors.

For massage: 5-8 drops in 30 ml base oil for relief from muscular fatigue or pain.

In household cleaners: For natural surface disinfection.

Chinese Medicine - Ayurveda

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), citronella is considered an herb that “disperses dampness” and “expels cold”, ideal for digestive discomfort, bloating and chills. It helps strengthen Qi and is used to balance the body’s energy.
In Ayurveda, citronella has warming properties and is mainly used for the balancing of Kapha and Vata dosha. It is considered to promote mental clarity, help eliminate toxins and soothe muscular and nervous tension.

Useful tips

- The use of citronella essential oil should be avoided during pregnancy, breastfeeding and by children.
- Essential oils are intended for external use and should always be used diluted in a carrier oil or other medium.
- Avoid direct contact with skin, eyes and mouth.
