Characteristics of Coconut
The coconut is the fruit of the palm-like coconut tree (Cocos nucifera). It originates from tropical regions of the planet, probably from Malaysia, and is known as “the king of fruits”, as its consumption offers many benefits to humans. The coconut palm is one of the tallest palms and can reach up to 30 meters in height. Its leaves, which are feather-like with pointed tips and light green color, reach 6 meters in length. At the base of the leaves and near the top of its slender cylindrical trunk, the fruits of the tree, the coconuts, can be found. The fruit weighs about 1.5 kilos and consists of a light green exocarp, a woody mesocarp and an edible fleshy endocarp with the well-known drinkable coconut water.
The cultivation of coconut for the exploitation of its fruit concerns the global market for the production of plant-based milk (coconut milk), oil production (coconut oil), the manufacture of mattresses from coconut fibers and, more recently, various household utensils. It is widely used in cooking as well as in the production of skin care products.
It is a rich source of dietary fiber and vitamins such as calcium and magnesium, maintains the health of bones and hair, and strengthens the function of the immune system.
History of Coconut
Coconut is one of the oldest foods consumed by humans in the tropical zone. There are fossils of the fruit dating back millions of years. Because the coconut floats on water, it spread across South Asia and was carried to other parts of the planet. Through the oceans, the fruits travelled with the waves and reached regions such as New Zealand, Indonesia and India, where they took root on the coasts and grew into large coconut palms. The people of these regions did not use the coconut palm only for its fruits. They used the entire tree: its wood and leaves served as raw materials in their constructions, and from the fibres of the trunk they made durable ropes. Today, scientists in the U.S.A. believe they can make clothes from the trunk fibres as an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fabrics.
In Europe, coconut is used mainly in confectionery and in dried form, while in other countries it plays a greater role in cooking. For example, in South Asian countries such as India and the Philippines, it is believed that coconut contains all the essential elements and nutrients the human body needs. Thus, coconut has become one of the most important ingredients in many recipes and is encountered daily in
traditional Asian dishes.
