Characteristics of the Rose

The rose (Rosa damascena or Rosa centifolia) is a perennial flowering plant belonging to the Rosaceae family. It is widely cultivated for its impressive blossoms and intoxicating fragrance. The variety Rosa damascena, known as the pink rose or Damask rose, is considered the most aromatic and is extensively used in the production of essential oil. Its flowering tops are collected early in the morning and steam-distilled to produce the precious oil.

Historical Information

The use of rose as a medicinal, cosmetic and aromatic plant dates back to ancient Persia and Egypt. The Persians were the first to distill rose oil, while in Ancient Greece and Rome, rose blossoms symbolized purity and love. Rose oil was extremely valuable and was used by queens such as Cleopatra in cosmetic and therapeutic applications. During the Middle Ages, Arabic medical texts mentioned its sedative, cardiotonic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Ingredients

Essential rose oil from rose leaves obtained by steam distillation.

Chemical Composition

Rose essential oil contains a unique combination of monoterpenes, alcohols and esters. Major constituents include citronellol, geraniol, nerol, and phenylethyl alcohol. These components give the oil its floral, sweet scent, while also providing antioxidant, antibacterial and calming effects. Its composition makes it one of the most powerful essential oils for the skin and for psycho-emotional balance.

Instructions for Use

Rose essential oil is highly concentrated and must always be diluted before use.

  • For the face: 1–2 drops in 10 ml vegetable oil (e.g. jojoba or almond oil) for anti-ageing, moisturizing and soothing action.

  • Aromatherapy: 3–5 drops in a diffuser for relaxation, mood enhancement and anxiety relief.

  • Massage or bath: 5 drops in 30 ml base oil or 3 drops in bath water with a dispersant (such as honey or milk).
Avoid direct application in undiluted form, as it may cause irritation.

Use in Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the rose is considered a plant that regulates the flow of Qi energy, especially when it is blocked due to emotional tension. It is used to balance the liver and relieve stress, tension and menstrual disorders.
In Ayurveda, the rose (Shatapatri) is cooling, soothing and balances Pitta dosha. It is used both internally (as rose water or rose petals) and externally (as oil or mask), enhancing emotional stability, heart function and skin health.

Useful tips

The use of essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy, breastfeeding and by young children.
- Avoid direct contact with skin, eyes and mouth.
- Always use essential oils diluted in a carrier oil or other medium.
