H Betula pubescens, γνωστή ως χνουδωτή ή λευκή σημύδα, είναι φυλλοβόλο δέντρο της βόρειας και κεντρικής Ευρώπης, με χαρακτηριστικό λευκό φλοιό και απαλά, χνοώδη νεαρά κλαδιά. Προτιμά υγρά, όξινα εδάφη και απαντάται κυρίως σε ψυχρές περιοχές. Σε αντίθεση με τη συγγενική Betula pendulaIt is more resistant to moisture and is most commonly found in wetlands and forested areas. Its use in phytotherapy and gemmotherapy has a long history, mainly for its detoxifying and diuretic properties.
