VALERIAN CHARACTERISTICS
Valerian, Valeriana officinalis, is a perennial flowering plant and belongs to the
family Valerianaceae. It is a native plant of Greece, Europe, China and
Korea. We will find it in meadows near rivers and lakes.
In our country, valerian is cultivated as a perennial plant. The height and width
of the plant, if not limited by harvests, can reach up to
one and a half meters.
The leaves are large and serrated with a deep green color, up to 20 cm.
length. The plant blooms in summer and displays many small flowers in inflorescences,
white or pink in color. It creates a rich and deep root system with
special characteristic aroma and its root is the part of the plant with the
most important medicinal properties.
HISTORY
The name of the herb comes from the Latin verb valere which means "To be"
you are strong and healthy”. In traditional medicine, the use of
herb by Hippocrates and Galen, who recommended it as a medicine for
insomnia and nervousness.
Because of its characteristic smell, people often placed it in the
entrance of the house as protection from evil spirits.
The 17th century astrologer and botanist, Nicholas Culpeper, believed that the plant
was under the influence of Mercury, and therefore has the ability of
movement and body heating.
Traditional farmers planted valerian near vegetables to enhance
growth and productivity. Today, valerian is cultivated
intensively in many parts of the world and is exploited by the
pharmaceutical companies that manufacture preparations for the treatment of
anxiety and insomnia.
PROPERTIES – BENEFITS
The taste of valerian is intense, dry and bitter. Valpotrienes are the main
essence of the plant and responsible for the calming effect on the central nervous
system.
The use of valerian tincture is recommended:
- As an effective aid for treating insomnia. A few drops
valerian in water is enough to have a natural and restful sleep.
- Sedative in stressful situations, against overexertion.
- For headaches and migraines.
- Strengthening the heart, suitable for tachycardia and reducing
pressure.
- As an antispasmodic, ideal for nervous dyspepsia and spastic colitis
(irritable bowel syndrome).
CHINESE MEDICINE
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, valerian is called Xie Cao.
and is recommended for women of reproductive age to normalize the
monthly cycle. It is thought to have analgesic properties and stops the
excessive bleeding. It calms the spirit and the use of the herb activates
the liver-heart meridians.
RECOMMENDATION
Alcohol (in variable proportions 50% - 90%), valerian root. Oral, natural extract from mother tincture (D1).
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF VALERIAN
Valpotrienes (responsible for the plant's calming effect), GABA, volatiles
oils 2%, volatile alkaloids, sugars, starch, resins, essential oil, organic
acids, nitrogenous compounds, isovaleric acid (responsible for the characteristic
plant smell), resin, tannins.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
- 30 drops diluted in 1/2 glass of water.
- 1-2 times a day for a specific period of time or as directed
the doctor and the pharmacist.
