Characteristics of lavender
OR lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is an aromatic, perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family, with characteristic purple flowers and an intense, sweet aroma. It thrives in dry, sunny environments and is a particularly hardy plant. Lavender is cultivated mainly for its cosmetic, medicinal and aromatic properties, with its flowers being collected when fully bloomed for the production of the essential oil through steam distillation.
Historical Facts
The use of lavender dates back to ancient Egypt, where it was used in embalming ceremonies. The ancient Greeks and Romans valued it for its cleansing and calming properties, hence its name, from the Latin to wash (to wash). During the Middle Ages it was used in therapeutic infusions and disinfectants for rooms, while in the 19th century its antiseptic action was officially recognized by Western medicine.
