Characteristics of Honey
Honey is the sweet, dense substance produced by bees. It is divided into two categories, flower honey and honeycomb honey.
Flower honey comes from the nectar of flowers and wildflowers that bees consume, which they turn into honey. This honey is stored in their combs and collected during the summer months. For each type of flower that the bees feed on, they produce a different type of honey. The most popular are orange honey, thyme honey, lavender honey and eucalyptus honey.
In contrast, honeydew honey comes from the juices of plants and from the insects that can be found on these plants. Its taste is slightly smoky and less sweet than flower honey. Forest honey, fir honey, pine honey and chestnut honey are recognized as honeydews.
This substance is particularly beneficial for the body and is considered a natural superfood. Honey prevents the growth of microbes, bacteria and carcinogenic cells. It has cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory and healing properties.
History of Honey
The consumption of honey was spread to ancient Greece by the ancient Egyptians. In ancient Greece, honey acquired a sacred role as it was believed that the gods of Olympus nourished themselves with it and the so-called “nectar”. Children were given a drink called “melikaro” which consisted of honey and milk. The sick were given “oxymel”, a mixture of honey and vinegar which was believed to combat fever. They also made “inomel” with wine and honey, which Hippocrates and Pythagoras recommended against fatigue. Thus, honey became part of the diet of all Greeks regardless of age and physical condition.
