History of White Musk
Musk was a name given to a strong-smelling substance obtained from a musk gland of the deer calf. The substance has been widely used as a perfume stabilizer since ancient times and is one of the most expensive animal products in the world. The name comes from the late Greek musk 'moskhos' and from the Sanskrit muṣka.
White musk essential oil was originally extracted from the glands of the Himalayan musk deer. The musk deer belongs to the Moschidae family and lives in Tibet, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China and other eastern countries. The calf lobe is a gland of the foreskin located in a sac under the skin of the male deer's abdomen. It is obtained by killing the male deer through traps set in the wild. But since 1979, the original way of production, which required the killing of the male deer, has been banned to avoid ecological imbalance. The essential oil of musk used today is produced in 2 ways:
1. Of plant origin, which consists of other essential oils that mimic the smell of musk and are derived from musk flowers (Mimulus moschatus) of western North America, muskwood (Olearia argophylla) of Australia and musk seeds (Abelmoschus moschatus) from India.
2. Since the acquisition of deer musk requires the killing of the endangered animal, almost all the musk perfume produced today in perfumery is synthetic under the well-known name "white musk".
