What is paraffin oil?

As its Latin name Parafinum defines [ Parum(minimum) + Affinum(action) = no effect.

Paraffin oil, also known as mineral oil or liquid paraffin, is a colorless and odorless liquid derived from petroleum. It is a highly processed and purified form of oil that has many uses and applications in various industries.


Uses of paraffin oil

1. Pharmaceutical products: Paraffin oil is used in some pharmaceutical preparations. It can be found in laxatives as a stool softener, providing relief from constipation. It works by lubricating the intestinal walls, facilitating the passage of stool.

2. Wineries, Beverages & Food: Paraffin oil can be found in some food processing and packaging applications. It is used in the wine production stage as a protective coating to prevent the oxidation of the wine and thus helps in its preservation. It is also used as a lubricant in food machinery and as a protective coating on fruits and vegetables to preserve their freshness and appearance.

3. Cosmetics and personal care: Paraffin oil is commonly found in skin care and cosmetic products. It is used as a moisturizing, emollient and occlusive agent to prevent moisture loss from the skin. It forms a protective barrier on the surface of the skin, keeping it hydrated and reducing dryness.

4. Baby Care Products: Paraffin oil is often found in baby oils and lotions. Its gentle and non-irritating properties make it suitable for use on sensitive baby skin, helping to hydrate and protect against dryness.

5. Industrial Applications: Paraffin oil is widely used in industrial settings. It is used as a lubricant, coolant and hydraulic fluid in machines and mechanical systems. Its low viscosity and high lubricating properties make it ideal for reducing friction and heat generation.

6. Veterinary Applications: Paraffin oil is used in veterinary medicine for various purposes. It can be given orally to help relieve constipation in animals as well as humans. In addition, it is used as a lubricant in certain medical procedures and as a protective coating for animal hooves.

6. Lamp Oil: Paraffin oil has been used for years as the most economical and efficient solution for burning and lighting. That is why it was also known as lamp oil. It was one of the basic goods in any house of previous centuries because it offered light and warmth. When it was discovered it replaced whale oil which was until then the "best" lighting solution, a solution only for the rich.

Summary

Although in recent years there has been a trend away from oils such as paraffin oil, it is one of the least likely allergens and most tolerable and useful ingredients of human industry. It was also that which, when discovered, brought economic light to all the homes of the world. While its astringent action has helped several times patients with constipation.
