History of the White Musk
Musk was a name given to a strongly odorous substance obtained from a gland of the musk deer. The substance has been widely used as a perfume fixative since antiquity and is one of the most expensive animal products in the world. The name comes from the Late Greek musk 'moskhos' and the Sanskrit muṣka.
White musk essential oil was originally extracted from the glands of the Himalayan musk deer. The musk deer belongs to the Moschidae family and lives in Tibet, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China and other eastern countries. The musk lobe is a gland of the preputial sac located under the skin of the male deer's belly. It is obtained by killing the male deer through traps set in the wild. It turns into a black granular material called "musk grain", which is then dyed with alcohol.
However, since 1979, the original method of production, which required the killing of the male deer, has been banned to avoid ecological imbalance. The musk essential oil used today is produced in 2 ways:
1. Of plant origin, which consists of other essential oils that mimic the smell of musk and come from musk flowers (Mimulus moschatus) of western North America, muskwood (Olearia argophylla) of Australia, and musk seeds (Abelmoschus moschatus) from India.
2. Since obtaining deer musk requires the killing of the endangered animal, almost all musk scent produced in perfumery today is synthetic under the familiar name "white musk".
