CHARACTERISTICS OF HYPERICUM PERFORATUM

St. John's wort is widely known as Hypericum perforatum, sword herb, Prodromos' herb, St. John's wort.
It is a low-growing evergreen plant that belongs to the Hypericaceae family. It grows wild and can be found in the Mediterranean region, as well as the rest of Europe, Africa, Asia, and in many places around the world. In our country, there are several different species of Hypericum, most of which are endemic.
The plant can grow even in the poorest, driest, and rockiest soils. It is recognized by its yellow flowers, which have five petals, while the central part of the flower contains the stigmas that give the characteristic red color.

HISTORY

It is said that the herb got its name, Hypericum, because in ancient times it was used to decorate temples and during religious ceremonies it was placed on icons (hyper – eikon = above the icon).
St. John's wort was valued by the renowned herbalists of ancient Greece—Hippocrates, Dioscorides, Pliny, and Galen—who used it to treat burns, joint pain, improve blood flow, and as a tonic during recovery. It was also used for embalming, which is one reason it is also called balm.

Dioscorides, the foremost botanist of antiquity, mentions four types of Hypericum, which he recommends for sciatica when taken with honey and water, while
Culpeper, who enjoyed assigning astrological signs to medicinal herbs, notes that Hypericum falls under the celestial sign of Leo and the dominion of the Sun.

PROPERTIES – BENEFITS

- St. John's wort is one of the most effective herbal antidepressants. Its use is recommended during transitional phases of life, such as experiencing loss (of any kind), separation, or menopause.
- It stabilizes the emotional and psychological fluctuations related to the monthly cycle.
- It has anxiolytic properties, making it ideal in situations like exams, moving, or changing jobs.
- It relieves pain associated with joint inflammation.
- As an anti-inflammatory herb, it significantly improves skin issues related to burns, eczema, and psoriasis.

CHINESE MEDICINE

The use of St. John's wort has been valued by Traditional Chinese Medicine. Known as Guan Ye Lian Qiao, it is used to clear heat and toxins from the body, balance the movement of Qi in the blood and liver. It is also recommended for its anxiolytic and antidepressant properties. It activates the meridians of the heart, bladder, spleen, and lungs.

COMPOSITION

Alcohol (in variable ratios 50% - 90%), leaves and flowers of St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum).
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF HYPERICUM PERFORATUM
Hypericin, flavonoids, rutin, quercetin, hyperforin (the main compound responsible for the plant's antidepressant properties), essential oils, tannins, carotenoids, glycosides, volatile oils.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

- 30 drops diluted in 1/2 glass of water.
- 1-2 times daily for a specific period or as directed by your doctor.
- 20 minutes before meals
