LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL
Characteristics of Lemon
The lemon tree is one of the trees that we easily find in our country, in every yard or garden. It belongs to the large citrus family such as the orange, the mandarin, the grapefruit, the kumquat. It is a native tree of tropical Asia where it has been cultivated for at least 2500 years.
The lemon tree, with its scientific name Citrus limon, is a fruit-bearing tree and its productivity is favored when it is located in sunny places and at a temperature of 15° - 30° C. Its height, if not pruned, can reach 6 meters. It needs fertile soil and enough water. It retains its leaves and produces fruit throughout the year. It is often planted in a pot in the garden or on the balcony.
It is cultivated in all parts of the world and its fruits are one of the most important sources of fiber, vitamin C and act synergistically with other flavonoids and carotenes,
Lemon essential oil is produced from the outer peel of the lemon using the cold-pressing method.
History of Lemonia
The lemon tree appeared in Greece in the 2nd century AD. The value of its fruits began to be recognized after the Middle Ages. At this time, it began to be cultivated in Sicily and Spain.
Since ancient times, lemon peel has been valued for its antiparasitic and insect repellent properties. In 1698, pharmacist Nicolas Lemery recognized the value of lemons, mentioning in his book the ability of lemons to purify the blood and relieve intestinal bloating. A little later, British sailors used lemons to treat scurvy by carrying large quantities of the fruit.
Today, lemon essential oil is used in confectionery recipes, in massage oils to treat cellulite, and anti-greasy shampoos.
