Characteristics of Mandarin
The tangerine (Citrus reticulata) is a fruit-bearing tree in the citrus family and a close relative of the orange, lemon, bitter orange and bergamot.
It grows in many regions of the world, especially in the Mediterranean zone. There are many varieties of mandarin such as Clementine, Satsuma Citrus unshiu, Ortaniq, Tangor.
It thrives in soils with good fertility and drainage. For its growth, the mandarin tree needs to be located in sunny places away from the wind in order to yield abundant fruit production.
It is a plant resistant to high temperatures and can be planted on the balcony in a pot.
The flowers of the mandarin tree appear in spring and have a strong and penetrating aroma rich in essential oils. Its cool fruits are prepared in mid-winter and are loved by young and old. Mandarins have significant nutritional value and are considered a source of vitamin C, fiber, minerals and antioxidants.
History of the Mandarin
According to history, the mandarin first appeared in China and India 3,000 years ago and took its name from the Mandarins. Since ancient times, it has been considered an auspicious tree and is used by Feng Shui as a symbol of good luck. It is often planted at the entrance of the house to bring prosperity and health to the family. In later years, the mandarin tree traveled to Europe, Africa and later spread to other countries.
The presence of the mandarin tree is mentioned in the Han Dynasty (202 BC - 220 AD) during which government officials managed citrus crops and collected a share of the production for the King. In 1127, some varieties of mandarin are described and at the same time it appears in Asian art. In our country, the mandarin tree is cultivated in many regions and its fruit is consumed in juices and various sweets.
