Characteristics of Ylang ylang
Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) is an evergreen tree that grows in a tropical climate and therefore we will find it mainly in Asia in countries such as Malaysia, the Philippines, Madagascar, Indonesia, but also in Australia.
The tree grows rapidly and can reach 20 meters. It prefers moist soils, sunny and semi-shaded places. It has long leaves that are characterized by gloss and its flowers, which are also long, start out green and as they mature they acquire a yellow color with an intense sensual aroma. Its flowering lasts a long time from May to December.
Ylang ylang essential oil is extracted from the fresh flowers of the tree, which are hand-picked in the early morning hours. The flowers are quite delicate and the distillation process is carried out immediately after they are harvested.
History of Ylang-ylang
The tree got its name from the Filipinos, referring to the image of the flowers as if they were “hanging in the air.” It is said that the inhabitants of the region prepared a therapeutic oil from the flowers in combination with coconut or palm oil, which they used to strengthen hair and protect the skin from dryness.
In 1860, a German sailor was impressed by the beauty and aroma of the flower and began the first production of essential oil distillation in Manila.
For many years it has been considered one of the most important raw materials in perfumery. In the last century its medicinal properties were first recognized by French chemists and then it began to be used as an antidepressant, aphrodisiac, antihypertensive and as an ingredient in products for the treatment of hair loss.
