Characteristics of Coconut
The coconut is the fruit of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). It originates from tropical regions of the planet, probably from Malaysia and is known as “the king of fruits", as its consumption provides many benefits to people. The coconut palm is one of the tallest palm trees that can reach up to 30 meters. in height. Its leaves, which are pinnate with pointed ends and light green in color, reach 6 meters in length. At the base of the leaves and near the top of the thin cylindrical trunk of it, the fruits of the tree, coconuts, can be identified. The fruit weighs about 1.5 kilos and consists of a light green exocarp, woody mesocarp and edible fleshy endocarp with the well-known drinking coconut water.
The cultivation of coconut for the exploitation of the fruit concerns the global market for production of plant milk (coconut milk), production of oil (coconut oil), manufacturing coconut fiber mattresses and recently various household utensils. It is widely used in cooking but also in the production of skin care products.
It is a rich source of fiber, vitamins such as calcium and magnesium, maintains health of hair bones, and enhances the function of the immune system.
History of the Coconut
Coconut is one of the oldest foods consumed by humans in the tropics. There are fossils of the fruit that date back millions of years. As the coconut floats on water, it spread to South Asia and was transported to other parts of the planet. Through the oceans, the fruits traveled with the waves and reached areas such as New Zealand, Indonesia and India where they took root on the coasts and grew into large coconut trees. The people of the region did not use the coconut palm only for its fruits. They used the entire tree, its wood and leaves were raw materials in their constructions and from the fibers of the trunk they made durable ropes. Today, scientists in the U.S. believe they can make clothes from trunk fibers as an ecological alternative to synthetic fabrics.
In Europe, coconut is mainly used in confectionery and dried form, in other countries it has a greater role in cooking. For example in countries of South Asian countries such as India and the Philippines believe that coconut contains all the necessary elements and nutrients that the human body needs. Thus the coconut ended up to be one of the most important ingredients in many recipes found daily in
traditional Asian meals.
