Features of Lilac
Lilac is a small deciduous tree, which can grow in an ecosystem without human intervention (native plant). Its Latin name is Syringa vulgaris and it belongs to the olive family.
It grows mainly in the Balkans and prefers fertile soils with good water drainage.

Nevertheless, it is a hardy tree with a frequent presence in areas with stony soil. It is characterized by thin branches with conical purple or white inflorescences. Its flowering lasts 20-30 days during the months of March and April. The height of the tree can reach 6-7 meters. It prefers sunny spots that allow it to increase its season and abundant flowering. The characteristic of the tree is that the cold of winter significantly favors the performance of flowering, as rich and fragrant flowers grow in the
tree branches.

Lilac essential oil is prepared from the flowers of the plant using the hydrodistillation method, which are collected shortly after sunrise, during the "morning awakening" of the tree.

History of Lilac
Although the lilac first appeared in the Balkan region, in the 16th century it traveled to the rest of Europe and America, where it acclimatized easily. There are many myths and customs associated with the unique fragrance of its flowers. During the Victorian era, the lilac became the symbol of purity and love.
Since 1949 on Mackinac Island, the ten-day Easter festival has been held. This time includes parades of horses decorated with lilacs, planting of new trees and visits to parks and gardens that grow different varieties of lilacs.

According to the legend, in ancient Greece, Syringa was a beautiful nymph who was lusted after by Panas. She, to escape his challenges, transformed into a bush with lilac flowers, which is why the lilac is also known by the name Lilac.

Today the tree has been identified with the holy days of Easter and the Resurrection of Christ. It is even said that the tree withered seeing the Passion of Christ and on the third day after the Resurrection, it came back to life and its fragrant flowers bloomed!
