How Bach Flower Remedies are made & The Simplicity of the System

There are 38 remedies in the Bach healing system. All of these were discovered in the 1920s and 1930s by Dr. Edward Bach, a well-known bacteriologist, physician and pathologist.

Each treatment is connected to a basic human emotion. Mimulus, for example, is for when we are anxious or afraid of something specific. Taking the medicine helps us overcome our fear and face it with courage.

The treatments are in liquid form so you can mix the herbs you need to help balance your current emotional state. Like Dr. Bach, we believe that healing on an emotional level has positive effects on our lives in general. A healthy emotional state and a balanced personality will allow your body to find its own natural state of health.

Dr. Bach designed his system to be simple. It may seem difficult at first, but anyone can learn how to use it. In this article, you'll find everything you need to get started. We have pages where you can look up each treatment and find out what they are for. Other pages tell you how to choose and get the healing flowers. Below you'll find how they're made, and we've got plenty of recommendations for further reading if you'd like to learn more.

How are Flower Arrangements made?

Remedies are prepared using one of the two methods below.

• Dr. Bach suggested the sun method for certain plants – especially those with the most delicate flowers. The sun method involves floating the flower heads in clean water for three hours and in direct sunlight.

• The second method is mainly used on more woody plants and those that flower when the sun is weak, there the boiling method is preferred where a preparer boils the flowering parts of the plant for half an hour in clean water.

In both cases the heat transfers energy from the flowers to the water. The activated water is then filtered and an equal amount of cognac is added to it as a preservative. This creates the mother tincture.

The mother tincture is then further diluted at a ratio of two drops to every 30ml to make the flower stock bottles you see in our Pharmacy.

Preparing remedies is a simple process and does not require special preparation or special skills. All it takes is willingness and understanding, along with sun and water, and the right plant on the right day.

If you decide to make a remedy for yourself, Dr. Bach taught us to be careful not to hold the flowers too long and massage them, as the medicine should only be affected by the flowers themselves. Choose a sunny, cloudless morning. Fill a small thin glass bowl with clean spring water, then gently and beautifully cut the flowers directly on the surface of the water, or cover the palm of your hand with a broad leaf, so that you can then touch the flowers to the water without to touch them.

Keep calm and take your time. Enjoy the experience and remember to take a moment to thank the plant or tree when you're done.
