Characteristics of the Crane
Geranium is a very hardy plant that can grow even in the hardest soil! Its scientific name is Pelargonium and it belongs to the Geraniaceae family, like mastic and arboretum.
Geranium is a low perennial shrub with fast growth and thin branches with rich green foliage. It loves sunny positions, with a southerly direction, which help it to have a long flowering, from early spring to autumn. The flowers of the plant do not smell, but if we lightly rub the leaves, the unique characteristic aroma emerges that is often used in perfumes and cosmetic creams.
Geranium is sensitive to cold, but it is a strong plant and is rarely affected by diseases. It is easily propagated in the spring by cutting small branches from the top vegetation which we plant in a pot or directly in the ground.
Geranium essential oil is extracted from the flowering tops of the plant by steam distillation.
History of the Geranium
The geranium was named Pelargonium from the Greek word for stork, due to the similarity of its flowers to the beak of a stork. It is a plant dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite. It originates from Africa and is currently cultivated in Egypt, Kenya and Algeria. It is said to have been introduced to Europe in the late 17th century, in areas where the climate was favorable for its growth.
One of the first to distill geranium essential oil was the French chemist Recluz, who began using it in perfumery. Later, the Italian doctor Rovesti recommended it for treating tension and anxiety.
In Greece, geranium is a very popular plant. It is considered one of the most effective
insect repellent plants and is often planted for this reason next to basil, lavender and sage.
