Characteristics of Nerantzia
The orange tree – Citrus aurantium, is a tree native to Southeast Asia and is now widely cultivated in most parts of the world. It belongs to the citrus family and is also known as the bitter orange, sour orange, citron or Seville orange.
It is a medium-sized tree, up to 3 meters tall. It is considered to be a cross between a mandarin and a grapefruit.
It grows wild in ravines and is a frost and drought resistant plant without any special requirements. The flowers of the tree bloom early in spring and their excellent aroma attracts bees, which is why it is often cultivated as a beekeeping tree for its
production of orange honey.
Bitter orange is rich in vitamin C, flavones, antioxidants, calcium, potassium, sodium, iron, magnesium. Neroli essential oil, known for its wonderful penetrating aroma, is produced from the flowers of the orange tree.
History of Nerantzia
The neroli tree was first cultivated in the Mediterranean region by Arab conquerors around the 10th to 11th centuries. Later, the tree traveled to Asia and America. The presence of neroli essential oil was first recorded in 1563. It is said that its name (neroli) came from the princess of Nerola, Anna Maria, who was the one who introduced it to the
Italy. Orange blossoms have been used in the past as wedding wreaths and as a symbol of purity.
In Greece and Cyprus, the orange tree grows in cities, beautifying city sidewalks and is widely consumed in spoon sweets and jams. In aromatherapy, it has been valued as an anxiolytic, at the same time relaxing, for its antidepressant and aphrodisiac properties. A decoction is prepared from the dried flowers of the orange tree, ideal for coughs, insomnia, and good digestion.
