CHARACTERISTICS OF MELISSA OSSICINALIS
Melissa officinalis, also known as lemon balm, lemon balm, or lemon balm, is a perennial plant belonging to the mint family. It is native to the Mediterranean, Europe, and parts of central Asia, but is now cultivated worldwide.
It is a shrubby plant that reaches 0.5-1 meters in height with small, oval, green leaves that are covered with hairs and have a lemony aroma. During the summer, small white flowers bloom, which are full of nectar and attract bees. It thrives in sunny places, with rich soil and protection from frost.
HISTORY
The use of lemon balm has been documented since 300 BC in ancient Greece. Dioscorides and Theophrastus had mentioned the medicinal uses of the herb, such as its antipyretic action and its contribution to the healing of venomous bites. At the same time, in ancient Greece and Rome, the hypnotic and sedative effects of the plant had been observed, and at that time, lemon balm was used to flavor wine and relieve digestive problems.
Today, the herb has been appreciated by the pharmacopoeia and is an ingredient in tinctures, drink mixes and dietary supplements intended to treat anxiety, mild depression and insomnia.
