PASSION FLOWER CHARACTERISTICS

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a climbing plant of the family Pathanthes, which includes about 500 different species of the plant, which vary in flower colors, size and fruit flavor. Passionflower is found as a wild plant in different parts of the world such as America, the Mediterranean and Asia. Some of these species produce edible egg-shaped fruits, known as passion fruit.

The plant grows quickly, can reach up to 10 meters in height and is therefore used as a hedge. Passionflower loves the sun and soil with good drainage. In our country, passionflower is known by the name “clockwork” and is planted for its impressive flowers, mainly in gardens and balconies to beautify the space.

HISTORY

The plant is said to have been named by Spanish missionaries to South America who learned about the Passion Flower from native Peruvians. The Spanish priests who were first introduced to the plant saw the flower as a natural representation of the crucifixion of Christ. Its three stigmas symbolized the nails of the crucifixion, while the coronal filaments likened it to a crown of thorns.

Passionflower was used by the Native Americans of South America for its sedative properties and to treat wounds by preparing a poultice from the plant's root.
The flowers of the plant have been mentioned as a symbol of friendship and in Eastern countries, even today, they are placed at the entrance to the house to bring prosperity and harmony to the space.
