CHARACTERISTICS OF PULMONARY DISEASE

The plant Pulmonaria (Pulmonaria officinalis) also known as lungwort, belongs to the Boraginidae family and is a perennial plant of small dimensions. In Greece we can also find it under the name Pneumoniki or Pneumonohorto thanks to its many beneficial properties that it exerts on the respiratory system. Its growth reaches 15-30 centimeters and consists of dark green, oval, hairy leaves with pointed tips and white spots. From March to June it fills with small flowers, which start as pink buds and later blue flowers. Pulmonaria can be found in the forest ecosystem of Europe, is resistant to frost and prefers shade.

HISTORY OF PULMONARY DISEASE

Historically, Pulmonaria has been used to treat many diseases in Europe over the past few centuries. It was administered to treat various lung problems, such as asthma, cough, bronchitis and shortness of breath. The connection of the plant with the lungs dates back to the Middle Ages when it was known as “wolf lung” which meant "wolf's lung".

Furthermore, in 1348-1350, attempts were made to treat the plague using this particular plant as medicine.
