PROPOLIS FEATURES
Propolis is one of the valuable substances produced by bees and is a building material for the hive. Its alternative name “bee-glue” is due to the sticky property of propolis. To create it, bees use resin that they collect from tree bark enriched with wax, pollen and other ingredients. The colors of propolis range from orange-green, yellow-green and various shades of brown.
The composition of the substance depends on the temperature. At low temperatures it hardens and becomes rigid, while in heat it becomes elastic, its stickiness is enhanced, and at very high temperatures it melts. Its function is twofold: Initially, it serves to seal any cracks in the hive that would endanger the nest. In addition, its antiseptic and antibacterial properties disinfect the hive internally.
Its antiseptic properties have ensured the presence of propolis in therapeutic preparations for the treatment and prevention of diseases.
