NETTLE CHARACTERISTICS
The Nettle, Urtica dioica, belongs to the Urticaceae family, which includes about 40 different species worldwide. The height of the nettle can reach one meter. Its stems and leaves are covered with pointed hairs, which are responsible for the characteristic itching, tingling and redness that occurs on the skin after contact with the plant. This reaction occurs due to the liquid and irritating substances found on the tips of the plant. The nettle is wild and is usually found in areas with a temperate climate and sufficient humidity, as well as in soils with contaminating elements. It is considered one of the “cleansing plants” of the soil.
Nettle blooms from spring to autumn and its flowers are small and odorless. It is often considered a weed, however, its therapeutic values have been recognized and it is often used in cooking. Its leaves are used to create juice, soup and in combination with spinach. They are harvested before the plant blooms.
HISTORY
The use of nettle has been reported since ancient times and was specifically consumed by the Greeks and Romans who ate nettle, often in the form of soup. Hippocrates and Galen wrote about the many uses of the plant and recommended it as a diuretic, as well as for the treatment of respiratory diseases.
In the Roman Empire, it is said that the soldiers of Julius Caesar deliberately touched nettle leaves to keep them awake from pain but also to increase blood flow and heat in the body. It also had an important role for Native Americans. Some did the same when they had to stay awake during the night. Some tribes are said to have used the plant as part of sacred rituals.
Later, during the First and Second World Wars, nettle fibers were used in the creation of fabrics as a substitute for cotton.
